In Memory of Miramar MVB’s Caleb Deibel
The Miramar men’s volleyball program mourns the loss of Caleb Deibel, one of the founding members of the program and its first two-time All-Pacific Coast Athletic Conference honoree. Deibel passed away on the evening of October 7th.
A former player for Spokane Boys Volleyball Club in Washington state, Deibel was a season-long starter in the Jets’ inaugural season of 2015, as an outside hitter. He would earn All-PCAC second team honors for his work that season. Returning in 2016, Deibel filled a massive hole in the Jets lineup when he moved to the setter position (without ever having played the position before), and anchored the lineup for the season. He was named to the 2016 All-PCAC third team for his play. Deibel transferred to the MVB program at Missouri Baptist University, where his playing career was cut short due to injury. He would go on to complete his studies and graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in Financial Accounting, in 2019.
“We are incredibly saddened by Caleb’s passing,” states Miramar MVB head coach John Landicho. “Caleb was a tremendous competitor and a great teammate. It has been heartwarming to read his former teammates’ statements on social media about their time with him, how they felt about him as a player and teammate. The efforts of Caleb and his teammates in our first two difficult seasons, laid the foundation for the success we enjoy now."
"Caleb is also forever memorialized in our program, as he is the first name on "The List," the compliation of Miramar MVB players who have gone on to play in a four-year university's MVB program," continued Landicho. "As the first Miramar MVB player to move on to 'the next level', Caleb helped set the standard for those that followed and will follow him, through his work on the court and in the classroom. He will always be a member of our Jets MVB family. The world is lessened by Caleb's departure.”
Also an accomplished tennis player, Deibel earned MVP honors playing tennis for Spokane Falls Community College. As a #3 singles and #2 doubles player, he took first place at the Northwest Athletic Conference Championships. An accomplished beach volleyball player, Deibel did not play volleyball at Mt. Spokane HS; he would be tutored in the sport of volleyball by former USA Volleyball national team member and University of Hawaii NCAA All-American Allen Allen.
Deibel is survived by his parents Adonna and Wayne Deibel, of Spokane, WA., and brothers Blake Deibel of Kansas City, MO. and Andrew Deibel of Spokane, WA. The Miramar MVB program will dedicate a home match to Caleb, in the upcoming 2021 season.
